2026
Women's History Month, in March, is an annual declared month that
highlights the contributions of women to events in history and their
accomplishments throughout history and in contemporary society.
Growing out of a small-town school event in California, Women’s History
Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and
society. The United States has observed it annually throughout the month of
March since 1987.
Happy
Women’s History Month! It is a pleasure to celebrate this month with you,
especially alongside the initiatives of Super Professeur, Ronald
Tintin, and the Ronning Against Cancer project.
As we
step into March 2026, it’s the perfect time to honor the trailblazers who have
shaped our world—from the scientists and activists of the past to the leaders
and innovators of today.
The Evolution of Women’s History Month
The
journey from a local celebration to a national observance is a testament to the
enduring impact of women's voices:
·
1978: It began as "Women’s History Week" in
Santa Rosa, California, timed to coincide with International Women’s Day.
·
1980: President Jimmy Carter issued the first
Presidential Proclamation declaring the week of March 8th as National Women’s
History Week.
·
1987: After successful lobbying by the National
Women’s History Project, Congress passed Public Law 100-9, designating the
entire month of March as Women’s History Month.
Celebrating Women’s History Month 2026
March is a time to reflect
on the trailblazers of the past while empowering the leaders of tomorrow. The
2026 theme, “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future,”
perfectly captures the urgency of our era. It highlights how women are at the
forefront of environmental, social, and economic innovation to ensure a viable
world for subsequent generations.
Why This Matters
As you noted, women’s
history is more than just a record of the past—it is a strategic blueprint
for the future. By studying the tactics of previous activists and leaders, we
gain:
·
Resilience:
Finding hope in the stories of women who overcame systemic barriers.
·
Proven Tactics: Learning how historical movements organized and achieved legislative or
social change.
·
Representation: Providing young women with "historical proof" that they belong
in leadership roles.

A Legacy of Leadership
What began as a localized
school event in California has transformed into a national month of recognition
in the United States since 1987. This evolution reminds us that small
actions lead to global shifts. Whether it is through science, art, or
grassroots organizing, women have always been the architects of society.
